Students from IHECS and ESJ Lille investigated European institutions

This year, the 23 journalism students explored the political, institutional and economic workings of the European legislative assemblies.

Their objective: to analyse the complexity of European institutions to reveal issues that are hidden, sometimes deliberately!

During the six months of collaborative investigation, these budding journalists spared no effort: dozens of meetings were recorded, several thousand data items were recovered and analysed, numerous European legislative texts were dissected, the accounts and financial statements of several associations were examined, and hundreds of experts, witnesses and institutions were contacted across Europe.

The first results of these months of work are available on the website of the newspaper Le Soir, including the opening article entitled “Mentally handicapped Belgians deprived of voting”.

This investigation was conducted in partnership with the Belgian newspaper Le Soir. The students benefited from the valuable advice of five experienced journalists: Christian Spilman (ex-AFP), Joël Matriche (investigative journalist at Le Soir) and Xavier Counasse (deputy editor-in-chief of Le Soir). The educational managers Damien Brunon (ESJ) and Gaëtan Gras (IHECS) also supervised the project. Thanks to this partnership, the students were able to immerse themselves in the methodology of collaborative investigation, benefiting from the expertise of seasoned professionals.
